The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan opens its Eloise suite today. As befits the hotel-dwelling storybook heroine whose favorite words include "Charge it, please," it won't be cheap. In fact, it will be so pricey you may wish to hide any mention of the place from the kiddies: It starts at $995 a night; to add an adjoining room for grown-ups, the nightly rate begins at $2,045.

SHANGHAI -- Many Americans who move here end up in high-rise buildings surrounded by other expatriates. But Nichol Bradford wanted a more authentic experience. "I wasn't moving halfway around the world, leaving everything I knew and everyone I loved, to play it safe," said Ms. Bradford, 38, a video game executive who relocated from Los Angeles in 2008.
